Theresienwiese, Nockherberg – and Menterschwaige. In Munich, the name Schottenhamel – more than any other – stands for enjoyment and tradition in special places. What does this mean to you?
My family and I live for enjoyment and tradition. That is why we are restaurateurs with heart and soul. We love Munich and are very grateful to be able to uphold Bavarian traditions and also create something new all the time. The Menterschwaige is very dear to me personally. It has been in the possession of our family for two decades, and for me it’s almost a member of the family.
You could say that the Menterschwaige is a fixed point in Munich’s south. What do you associate with this location?
We love Harlaching – and not only as entrepreneurs. We have been living here for a long time, my husband even grew up here. He went to the kindergarten here, just like our son. Many people who are important to us, like friends and family members, also call Harlaching their home. That’s why I’m all the more delighted to be able to offer our community and Munich as a whole a venue like the Menterschwaige, and we feel honoured by all the positive feedback.
My husband and I really appreciate being part of such an important and popular establishment. It’s a meeting place for young and old. The children play together and the adults converse instead of staring at their mobile phones all the time. And this in a day and age in which digitisation is ever-present and we tend to quickly forget about our fellow human beings. This is where gourmets, neighbours, friends from kindergarten and school as well as business people come together to talk, laugh, eat and drink. It’s really wonderful!

The listed former country estate of Menterschwaige is one of Munich’s oldest beer gardens – a popular stopover on the Isar river tour. Why has it been attracting people for such a long time?
It’s a place of history and tradition, quality and nature, high-quality ingredients from the region and innovative chefs. All the dishes and drinks we serve are carefully selected and prepared with love. The premises, too, are a real highlight. They combine modern and typically Bavarian elements in a harmonious way. The outdoor beer garden is dotted with beautiful, old trees that our guests appreciate all year round. There’s an adventure playground for the children, and even childcare on Sundays. All of this makes our Menterschwaige what it is and what our guests appreciate and love so much – and most of the time already after the first visit.
